The Great Wheel

(Words and music by and © Talis Kimberley, 2012)

Here is my path, here are my steps,
Here is my path, here are my steps
I might as well dance it as not
Might as well dance it, dance it
I’ve heard the tale of flax into gold,
I’ve heard the tale, flax into gold
Well I’m spinning the fleece that I’ve got
I’m spinning, spinning, spinning

And the place where I stand, and the shape of the land
da da da da…
Are changed by the path that I tread
And the great wooden wheel that answers my hand
Takes the fleece and returns me the thread.

Back a step, back a step,
Gently-oh, gently-oh
Forward now, forward now,
Round you go, round you go

Under my boots, under my feet,
Under my boots, under my feet
Good level flagstones are laid
Good level flagstones, flagstones
Swept clean each day of the debris and dust
Swept clear each day, debris and dust
With the good bristle broom that you made
With the broom that you made

And the place where I stand, and the shape of the land
da da da da…
Are changed by the path that I tread
And the great wooden wheel that answers my hand
Takes the fleece and returns me the thread

Here is my path, here are my steps,
I might as well dance it as not
I’ve heard the tale of flax into gold,
Well I’m spinning the fleece that I’ve got.

Back a step, back a step,
Gently-oh, gently-oh
Forward now, forward now,
Round you go, round you go
Back a step, back a step
Gently-oh, gently-oh

And the cherrytree’s wood does the job that it should
And the orchard’s a dream in its grain
And the fruit that we had there were many and good
And we shall not eat their kind again

And the place where I stand, and the shape of the land
Are changed by the path that I tread
And the great wooden wheel that answers my hand
Takes the fleece and returns me the thread

Back a step, back a step,
Gently-oh, gently-oh
Forward now, forward now,
Round you go, round you go

Here is my path…
Here is my path…
Here are my steps…
Here are my steps…
I’m spinning the fleece, spinning the fleece
spinning the fleece, spinning the fleece
Spinning the fleece, spinning the fleece and it’s
spinning the fleece, spinning it’s
Forward now, forward now…
Gently-oh, gently-oh
Back a step, back a step…
Round you go, round you go
Forward now, forward now…

A Little Bit About 'The Great Wheel'...

A trip to St Fagans Folk Museum started this and Emma and her great wheel gave it motion. I love the fact that there are cottages in Wales with grooves in the floor made by the women of the house dancing the dance that goes with the working of the great wheel. I've been asked what happened to the cherry tree, and I am afraid I actually don't know. Perhaps I will find out in another song.
