JACK HARE

I am born of the Moon and Her I serve;
I am Her earthly messenger
I dwell in the shadow of Her and by Her will;
I run to the sound of Her drum, overland, underhill -

Jack Hare, Jack Hare, there's an errand to be run
Take this jewel to the Lord of the Sun
'Cos I know you're swift and I know you're cunning
And I need you, Jack Hare, to do the running

Oh, I'm off and running like a mad thing, hey -
While morning rubs the sleep from tired eyes, I'm away
Harebells busy ringing again but I can't stop now
Lick the riddle from the honeycomb, I'm overhill, undercloud

Jack Hare, Jack Hare, there's an errand to be run
Take this jewel to the Lord of the Sun
'Cos I know you're swift and I know you're cunning
And I need you, Jack Hare, to do the running

"What's your dream?" asks Gold-and-Green
"You might try looking behind the rain"
So Jack jumps high as a hare can try
But the higher he got, the further the Sun became

And the Moon danced out of step;
Oh, Lady, Lady, you're not where you should have been
Such a cry She gives, and all the creatures of the night
Were in Her scream

There's a fiddler-man on the back of a pig who makes daisies grow
He says I need the Practical Man, so off I go
But the Practical Man wants hare for tea, and I have to jump again
Newton pulls a string or two, and I'm oversea, out of flame -

Jack Hare, Jack Hare, there's an errand to be run
Take this jewel to the Lord of the Sun
'Cos I know you're swift and I know you're cunning
And I need you, Jack Hare, to do the running

Not long now till Sun must set, and I've miles and miles to travel yet
Run so fast so far so free I've outrun Newton's gravity
Along the gold towards the sun, as fast as ever a hare can run
I bear my Lady's sacred trust, I have to reach the Sun, I must

Oh, great Lord Sun, I bear a gift,
From a Lady pure and true
And it is the answer to a riddle
I shall tell to you

Oh - Jack Hare, Jack Hare, there's an errand to be run
Take this jewel to the Lord of the Sun
'Cos I know you're swift and I know you're cunning
And I need you, Jack Hare, to do the running

Jack Hare, Jack Hare, there's an errand to be run
Take this jewel to the Lord of the Sun
'Cos I know you're swift and I know you're cunning
And I need you, Jack Hare,
I need you, Jack Hare,
I need you, Jack Hare, to do the running...
