Icarus’ Sister

(Words and music by and © Talis Kimberley, 1993)

Icarus’ sister – she’s a commonsense girl
She wears sensible clothes and she doesn’t ever talk to strangers
She’s never mentioned in the history books
Cos she listened when Daedalus warned her of the possible dangers
But I don’t for a minute believe that means she never had wings of her own
Maybe she was too smart to be seen, or too smart to be brought down

If her Daddy ever saw her fly, if her Daddy ever saw her fly
Wouldn’t he be proud of her? Wouldn’t he be proud
If her Daddy ever saw her fly, if her Daddy ever saw her fly
Wouldn’t he be proud of her? Wouldn’t he, wouldn’t he be proud?
Oh, wouldn’t he, wouldn’t he be proud?

Icarus’ sister, she’s a gap in the tale

We don’t know where she went we can only make guesses about her
If anyone saw her when she put on her wings
He was too scared to talk, too in awe of her to try to prevent her
And I don’t for a minute believe she fell, cos she didn’t have Icarus’ pride
She knew too much and she flew too well and the weather was on her side

If her Daddy ever saw her fly, if her Daddy ever saw her fly
Wouldn’t he be proud of her? Wouldn’t he be proud
If her Daddy ever saw her fly, if her Daddy ever saw her fly
Wouldn’t he be proud of her? Wouldn’t he, wouldn’t he be proud?
Oh, wouldn’t he, wouldn’t he be proud?

Oh. where did you leave your wings
When you hung them up at the end of the flight
Sure they’d be a little dusty now, poor things
Nothing that a little care wouldn’t put right
Oh, why did you lay them down
Did you fly until your bones were growing old
When you had to give up your feathered crown
Did you fling it at the sea the sun turned gold?

Icarus’ sister – she’s a commonsense girl
She wears sensible clothes and she doesn’t ever talk to strangers
She’s never mentioned in the history books
Cos she listened when Daedalus warned her of the possible dangers

Ah, what journeys did you make
Did you fly at night so you wouldn’t be seen?
Did you wonder if your fathers heart would break?
Did he want to be the star of every scene?
Well, girl, what’re you planning now –
This is what you wanted after all
You’ve made your own success and how
Left the old man spinning in free fall

Did your Daddy ever see you fly? Did your Daddy ever see you fly?
Well, we’re still proud of you, hey – still proud of you
Icarus’ sister – still proud of you…
