Close The Gate

(Words and music by and © Talis Kimberley, 2014)

Length – 2:58

So close the gate upon the yard –
The empty lambing pen
And send the sheep upon their way
To pasture once again.
The land remains, the land endures,
The land remembers all
And likewise all the bonny sheep
Still heed the shepherd’s call

Now Autumn-stretched, the shadows lie
Along the old drove road
And Winter treads a step behind
To claim what he is owed
The sweat and ache of labour done:
The land remembers all
And likewise all the bonny sheep
Still heed the shepherd’s call

And still and still the kestrel’s flight
Shall bless the clear bright sky;
And still the knowing each dear beast
All, holds the shepherd’s eye
So close the gate upon the yard –
The empty lambing pen
And send the sheep upon their way
To pasture once again.

The land remains, the land endures
Wherein we spend our days
And when we leave what we have loved
Then something sacred stays

A Little Bit About 'Close The Gate'...

Spending a day with the flock at a particularly sad time, the melody for this entered my head and needed singing. The lyric is bittersweet, and one of my very favourites, and the hand that closed the gate that one very important time, was mine. There were tears. All is well now, however, and the lambing pen is only empty now because they’re all out in the field with their dams.
