Cast On, Jenny

(Words and music by and © Talis Kimberley, 2013)

First you take a pair of sticks Cast on Jenny
First you take a pair of sticks Cast on, Jenny, cast on
First you take a pair of sticks
Not too thin and not too thick
Here’s how Jenny gets her kicks Cast on, Jenny, cast on!

Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles, hats and scarves and socks and gloves
Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles – every stitch with love!

Then you take a ball of wool Cast on Jenny
Then you take a ball of wool Cast on, Jenny, cast on
Then you take a ball of wool
Thank the sheep for the three-bags-full
Find the end and give it a pull – Cast on, Jenny, cast on!

Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles, hats and scarves and socks and gloves
Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles – every stitch with love!

Slip the knot and make the stitches Cast on Jenny
Slip the knot and make the stitches Cast on, Jenny, cast on
Slip the knot and make the stitches
Mathematicians, sailors, witches
More in hope of joy than riches Cast on, Jenny, cast on

Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles, hats and scarves and socks and gloves
Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles – every stitch with love!

Knit for hope and justice done Cast on Jenny
Knit for hope and justice done Cast on Jenny, cast on
Knit for hope and justice done
Knit until the battle’s won
Teach your daughters, teach your sons Cast on Jenny, cast on

Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles, hats and scarves and socks and gloves
Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles – every stitch with love!

Cast on, Bob, and cast on, Suzy Cast on Jenny
Cast on, Bob, and cast on, Suzy Cast on Jenny, cast on
Cast on, Bob, and cast on, Suzy
Emma, Theo, Gwen and Lucy
Kettle’s on and the fire’s all cosy Cast on, Jenny, cast on

Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles, hats and scarves and socks and gloves
Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles – every stitch with love! (Once more for Eleanor!)

Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles, hats and scarves and socks and gloves
Cast on, Jenny-with-the-needles – every stitch with, every stitch with, every stitch with love!

A Little Bit About 'Cast On, Jenny'...

Inspired by conversation at Devizes folk club where Bob Berry told me gleefully that of course he knew how to knit, and I laughingly promised him and other friends in the audience a knitting shanty, because the world needed more knitting shanties. Susie, Emma, Theo, Gwen, and Lucy, are all also real people and real crafty friends.
