Can You Knit, Brave Boys?

(Words and music by and © Talis Kimberley, 2012)

When the ladies are knitting the menfolk keep quiet, ‘That’s not
My thing at all,’ hear them say
But they’re off to the Gentlemen-Only Knit Club
When they think no-one’s looking their way

Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit? Can you cast on and off, can you cable a bit
Can you keep the rows steady until the gloves fit? Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit?

Nobody’s telling, so nobody knows
And it’s dark when they set out to meet
Three of them, four of them, five or six more of them
All heading off down the street

Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit? Can you cast on and off, can you cable a bit
Can you keep the rows steady until the gloves fit? Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit?

Lies have been told so their cover’s intact
Bowling or trips to the pub –
But when nobody’s looking they’re stitching and they’re hooking
At the Gentlemen-only Knit Club

Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit? Can you cast on and off, can you cable a bit
Can you keep the rows steady until the gloves fit? Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit?

It’s more than the textures and colours, you know
It’s more than the pattern in hand
It’s the maths in the stitches – the theory of knots
That makes knitting appealing to man;

Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit? Can you cast on and off, can you cable a bit
Can you keep the rows steady until the gloves fit? Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit?

Continental!

Pouvez-vous tricoter, messieurs? Pouvez-vous commencer et finir un peu?
Faites attention aux xouleurs, n’avez-vous pas de peur, pouvez-vous tricoter, messieurs?

Slip one!

Can you !! brave !! can you !! Can you !! on and !! can you !! a bit

In the round!

Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit? Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit?

Knit two together!

Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit? Can you cast on and off, can you cable a bit
Can you keep the rows steady until the gloves fit?

Cast off!

Can you knit, brave boys, can you knit brave boys, can you knit brave boys can you knit?

A Little Bit About 'Can You Knit, Brave Boys?'...

I wish I could actually remember writing this, but I can't. I do however remember arranging it, with Chantelle, one tortuous afternoon session when I had all the ending jokes clear in my head but had no idea which order they went in or how to get from the one to the other. We sang this for perhaps the first time in the local Bowls Club at a house concert I’d arranged there and watched with delight as our dear friend and knitting guru Emma nearly fell off her chair when Chantelle called ‘continental!’ and we switched to French....
